The story of Champagne Egly-Ouriet is fundamentally a story of dedication to terroir and vinous power. Established in the mid-twentieth century and elevated to legendary status under the visionary guidance of winemaker Francis Egly, this family-run domaine located in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay has redefined what is possible for grower-producer Champagnes. Rather than relying on the traditional, highly blended style popularized by the region’s largest houses, the estate treats Champagne first and foremost as a fine still wine. By focusing on low yields, old vines, and meticulous organic-leaning viticulture across their twenty hectares of prime holdings in Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzenay, and Vrigny, they harvest grapes with an exceptional level of natural ripeness and concentration.

In the cellar, the winemaking philosophy is uncompromising and heavily influenced by the great estates of Burgundy. Fermentation occurs primarily in oak barrels using native yeasts, and malolactic fermentation is strictly avoided to ensure that the naturally rich, concentrated fruit is balanced by a vibrant, crystalline acidity. The defining hallmark of Egly-Ouriet is its legendary commitment to extended lees aging. While standard regional practices require only fifteen months of bottle aging, Egly-Ouriet cellars its entry-level cuvées for three to four years, while prestigious releases like the monumental, old-vine Blanc de Noirs from the chalky Les Crayères vineyard or the Extra Brut V.P. spend up to nine years resting in the cool chalk cellars. This incredibly patient process results in Champagnes of profound depth, vinous structure, and complex autolytic character.
