Chateau Lascombes is one of Margaux’s most celebrated estates, carrying the distinction of being ranked a Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Classification. Its name derives from Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes, who was born on the estate in the early 17th century, and whose legacy is inseparably tied to its reputation. Today, the property encompasses around 120 hectares of vineyards, making it one of the largest classified growths in the Médoc. Its terroir is diverse, combining Margaux’s signature gravel with clay and limestone soils, allowing for a rich mix of plantings. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot dominate the vineyard, with Merlot taking a particularly prominent role compared to many neighbours in Margaux. This gives Lascombes its plush, rounded style, marked by ripe fruit, supple tannins, and an approachability that sets it apart while still retaining the finesse of the appellation.
Throughout its history, Lascombes has seen a succession of notable owners and significant investment. In the 20th century, Alexis Lichine, one of Bordeaux’s great modernisers, helped elevate its profile. More recently, the estate was bought by the Lawrence family in 2022, who since appointed Axel Heinz – former winemaker at Ornellaia and Masseto – as CEO and winemaker. This ‘renewal’ of Chateau Lascombes aims to “raise the Grand Vin to the highest level of quality that truly reflects the terroir, in keeping with its heritage as one of the finest wines in Margaux and the Médoc.”
