In November we had the pleasure of visiting one of the world’s most revered wine regions: Burgundy. A jam-packed schedule of tastings with some of our favourite producers left the team buzzing with excitement ahead of the 2023 En Primeur campaign. Burgundy En Primeur 2023: Generous and Alluring
The 2023 Burgundy vintage unfolded with a warm, dry winter that delayed budbreak, followed by average spring rainfall that nurtured vine growth. However, the season was far from straightforward. Hailstorms in Meursault and a late-summer heatwave presented challenges, especially during the harvest, which began in late August and extended into September. While the heat made picking arduous, it concentrated the red wines, adding depth and richness.
Vineyard management played a pivotal role, as generous yields required meticulous green harvesting to balance crop loads. Many producers reported record volumes, a welcome outcome given the anticipated scarcity of the 2024 vintage.
The Reds
The 2023 reds are a triumph of balance and charm, combining ripe, approachable fruit with moderate alcohol (12β13.5%), reminiscent of 2017 but with greater concentration. They offer a delightful charm and succulence, showcasing terroir and structure that will reward both early enjoyment and long-term aging.
“What struck me about the 2023 reds were just how refined, pure and accessible they are. This is a true Pinot Noir loverβs vintage, that will delight owners for years to come. I loved the crunchy red fruit profile and suave, harmonious tannins.”
James Colacicchi, Sales Director
The Whites
The whites of the CΓ΄te de Beaune are equally compelling. They display a richness and complexity underpinned by excellent acidity, offering an almost oily texture without sacrificing clarity or precision.
“Most white wine samples I tasted in Burgundy in November, I could have taken home and drunk that evening. You will not be waiting decades to open the 2023s β theyβre lovely and accessible now.”
James Colacicchi, Sales Director
