Petrolo is one of Tuscany’s most distinctive estates, situated in the Colli Aretini, the eastern hills that circle Monti Chianti. This is a historic area for viticulture and olive oil production, formally recognised as a zone of exceptional agricultural value as early as 1716 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The Petrolo estate itself sits on an ancient fiefdom, where traces of Roman ruins remain beneath the Galatrona tower, a landmark that continues to define the property today.
Since the 1940s Petrolo has been in the hands of the Bazzocchi family, who have progressively shaped it into one of Italy’s most admired modern producers. From the 1980s onwards, their focus has been firmly on uncompromising quality and authenticity, producing wines that express both the unique terroir and a philosophy of meticulous, small-scale production.
The vineyards are planted across a patchwork of soils, ranging from galestro and sandstone to clay and limestone, each parcel carefully matched to grape variety. Low yields are a defining principle at Petrolo, ensuring ripeness, concentration, and a balance of power with freshness. The estate’s portfolio is intentionally tight, built around three flagship reds: Galatrona, the pure Merlot that has become a star among Tuscany’s Super-Tuscans; Torrione, a blend with Sangiovese at its heart, named after the medieval tower on the property; and Boggina, a single-vineyard Sangiovese bottling that shows the grape at its most refined and site-specific. Alongside these, limited-production olive oil and small parcels of white wine complete the estate’s output.
