Restless River is located in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the second closest appellation to the sea and the largest of the three in the region. With its cool maritime climate and decomposed granite soils over clay, the area is ideal for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines.
The winery’s name comes from the nearby Onrus River (Afrikaans for βRestless Riverβ). True to its name, the estate is constantly evolving under the gentle guidance of Craig and Anne Wessels.
Known for top-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon, Restless River has gained international recognition. Craig, a self-taught winemaker, started the project as a hobby after he and Anne purchased a neglected sheep farm in 2004. Their farm held the valleyβs original Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, inspiring Craigβs passion for viticulture.
Committed to sustainability, Craig has expanded the vineyards and embraces organic farming. With a philosophy of minimal intervention, he allows each wine to reflect its site, using indigenous yeasts, careful maturation, and extended bottle aging to ensure balance, nuance, and longevity.
