Taittinger

In 1734, Jacques Fourneaux founded the original Champagne house, before it was acquired by Pierre Taittinger in 1931. Today, Pierre’s great grandchildren – Vitalie and Clovis – are at the helm and are actively involved in the day-to-day running of the Reims based house. Taittinger is situated above many miles of chalk tunnels and cellars that once belonged to the Benedictine monks of the abbey of St Nicaise and are now listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Taittinger’s high use of Chardonnay in their Champagne has become their hallmark and provides elegance, finesse and delicacy to their wines. Comtes de Champagne is only produced by Taittinger in exceptional years, with the grapes selected from the best of the Grand Cru sites. After ageing for 10 years in the chalk cellars, the Champagne is released and presented in a traditional 18th Century style bottle. The house’s rarest cuvee is the Comtes de Champagne Rose and is made from 30% Chardonnay from Grands Crus in the Cote des Blancs and 70% Pinot Noir from Grands Crus in Montagne de Reims. Taittinger’s special addition of 15% still red wine to the blend is the secret of the Champagne’s uniqueness.
