After taking over his father’s estate of Le Chiuse di Sotto, Gianni Brunelli soon earned a reputation for producing truly impressive Brunello di Montalcino. This boutique winery in Montalcino, Tuscany, is known for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines that express the unique character of Sangiovese. Gianni worked alongside his wife, Laura, until he sadly passed away in 2008. Laura now continues Gianni’s vision, producing Brunellos with finesse, depth and ageability, in addition to their other traditional Tuscan wines.
The estate has vineyards in two of Montalcinoβs most celebrated areas: Canalicchio, with its higher-altitude, cooler climate, and Podernovone, with its warmer, sunnier exposures. What sets Gianni Brunelli apart is their commitment to authenticity and respect for the land. Farming is carried out organically, with careful attention to preserving biodiversity and soil health. In the cellar, winemaking remains traditional, favouring natural fermentations and extended ageing in large Slavonian oak casks to highlight purity and balance. The wines, from the approachable Rosso di Montalcino to the profound Brunello Riserva, are praised for their precision, elegance, and sense of place.
