Lay & Wheeler Trading Estate Nights

Dinner with Johann Henschke (again!)

Following the success of our first Estate Nights dinner with Johann Henschke last year, we cleared our diaries to arrange a follow-up event with the sixth-generation winemaker.

So while the fashion world obsesses over the Met Gala held on the First Monday in May, for us, the First Wednesday in May is a far more important date in the calendar…

At London’s Hawksmoor, we gathered with clients to taste the latest releases from the legendary Henschke family. For the second year in a row, we were joined by sixth-generation winemaker Johann Henschke for the momentous occasion of marking the 70th vintage of Mount Edelstone, Australia’s longest-running single-vineyard wine. Read more about this landmark bottling here, or read on for more details from this delicious evening of food and wine.

β€œOne of Australia’s iconic producers, Henschke has not missed a beat over the years.”

Josh Raynolds, Vinous

The evening featured fascinating mini-vertical tastings of The Wheelwright, Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace. Starting with the vibrantly fresh 2022s before tracing the wines back over three decades, we learnt about Johann’s family history in the Eden Valley and explored how their commitment to ‘place’ has defined Australian fine wine. All the wines for the evening were paired with an array of dishes, from Ash-baked beetroot and Old Spot belly ribs, to Sirlon, T-Bone and Prime Rib that Hawksmoor cook so excellently. More on Henschke

The Henschke family have made wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868, with fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke taking over in 1979. Together with his viticulturist wife, Prue, they have built upon their inheritance, transforming this traditional producer into one that is celebrated worldwide. Their two flagship single vineyards wines, β€˜Hill of Grace’ and β€˜Mount Edelstone’, have become two of Australia’s most acclaimed.

Henschke own three vineyards in the Eden Valley and one in the Adelaide Hills, all of which are farmed in line with biodynamic principles. Prue’s pioneering work in the vineyard cannot be underestimated…
